Clean a used SAK

I just got a bundle of used SAK's and I want to clean them. They're not dirty, just basic wear, but I know how gunk gets down in there, plus there's the toothpick.

I put one in boiling water and it slightly warped the scales. I'm weary of bleach because of the scales as well. My next idea is soaking in isopropyl but I wanted to ask if anyone has a better idea or has experience with this. Thanks.

Victorinox say you can just run em through the dishwasher, though I prefer just warm water and an old toothbrush.

The plastic scale covers on Victorinox SAKs can be somewhat sensitive to heat (as you found) and some solvents also. I have one Vic SAK that I doused in some 91% isopropyl alchohol a while back, to flush out the joints. I noticed afterwards, the alcohol had actually softened the plastic enough that just holding it between my fingers left 'embossed' fingerprints on the covers. Good news was, I just wiped it down with some more alcohol on a soft cloth, and smoothed them out. That was weird...

WD-40 seems gentle enough to flush them out. I soaked one Vic in WD-40 for 3-4 days, to loosen up some heavy rust which had frozen most of the blades/tools shut. The knife had been unknowingly left in a toolbox in the covered bed of a pickup for a few years, in humid Central Texas. No harm to the covers in doing the WD-40 soak, and it loosened it up enough to break the joints free. Flushed it even more with WD-40, while also exercising the joints, until all of the liquid ran clean (no more red/brown tint). I then wiped it all down.

Thanks guys! I'm gonna soap up a toothbrush and go to town, then polish em off with a WD-40 bath. And just order replacement toothpicks. I appreciate the help.

I've put folders in an ultrasonic cleaner with warm soapy water. Seems to work pretty good for me.

Another thing you could use is a mascara brush. They brushes are nice and thin, I bend the tips into what ever shape I need. They're heap. Here's something kind of goofy that I did with them: I found that the handle was 1/8" in diameter, so I chucked it up in my Foredom and ran it at slow rpms to clean stuff.

Have you ever put a SAK in the ultrasonic? I've been weary of doing so myself because I fear that it will ruin the scales or dissolve the glue that holds it in place. Their scales seem a bit lacking in the durability side in my opinion.

Personally though with how there is toothpick in there and how I use the SAK toothpick all the time I would go overboard by some peoples standards in cleaning. I would remove the plastic scales and clean the scales separates from the metal as I can be a bit more hard on the metal than the scales. For me that probably means a ultrasonic cleaner, toothbrush, alcohol swabs. The scales would be soap and water, alcohol swabs. And I would just buy new toothpicks, their cheap. I am just worried about all the crud/gunk in the scales from the precious owner using the toothpick, and getting all that stuff back on it after I put a clean toothpick back in there unless I do this.

If you don't have an ultrasonic, it's by no means necessary just use soap and water with a toothbrush or larger nylon brush to get into all the nooks and crannies to get the crud out.

The alcohol swabs use isopropyl alcohol just like obsessed with edges used but in a more controlled fashion. So it is possible but a lot less likely that you experience the same thing he did. I use alcohol swabs to great effect on quite a few things that I be hesitant to douse isopropyl alcohol in, the limited amount you use being the key reason. It also typically starts to dry up before I even think about wiping it dry so exposure time is also quite limited due to the nature of it.

I will admit I never thought of using isopropyl alcohol like obsessed with edges did, I have to keep that it mind as it may come in handy at a latter date on a different project.

Curiosity just got the better of me, so I tried the alcohol swab which is 70% isopropyl alcohol on the busted scale on my Vic Rally it seems to take little effort to disolve the scale, far less than expected. Just rubbing the swab on it a few times leave a red print on the swab. It's actually enough to dull down the color quite easily and make it look like junk. And I found if I rub it with my hand it will bring the normal color back after the alcohol dissolved. You can't tell I did anything to that scale now, but that scale is pretty beat up from pocket carry since 2006 so that's not saying much. In short I take back what I said, don't use it, it's more hassle than it's worth unless you feel like experimenting with a scale.

(I just didn't want to recommend something that could damage a knife, so I just tested it out despite have good success on everything else. I left the original post up in case anyone read it and just edited in the other stuff after experimenting.)

An ultrasonic cleaner with warm water and dawn will not hurt anything. It is my preferred method to clean all of my folders. It does far more than just soaking in soapy water.

SAK plastic scales (cellidor) aren't glued on. They are snapped on.

You might try some Lysol liquid disinfectant. Not the aerosol, but the yellow liquid product that can be diluted as a multipurpose cleaner/disinfectant.

It is very easy to remove the scales for cleaning, they are just a press fit and all that is required to remove them is to slide a knife blade under them a little way, and they come right off. You may not want to remove them very regularly as I'm sure they will become loose soon enough, but for that one off deep clean you will be fine.
