I am looking for some clean lakes (actual lakes, not dilated river segments) in these two great States, where I could put on my wet suit and fins and do some swimming.

Thanks.

...Hey Joe...If you could go just a little bit further north you could dive some really nice lakes in Wisconsin...Devils Lake is beautiful and crystal clear. The lakes around Madison are also terrific. Lake Mendota, Wabesa, Monona, etc are great and offer some clear diving with depths up to around 100 feet. I think they "officially" say they run to 85 feet or something but I've fished them and I saw a lot of 100+ depths on my graph...Here's some websites to check out...

Um, how 'bout Lake Michigan!?! :)

What are you looking to do? deep, shallow, poke around in weeds, look for treasure, chase fish? The "chain of lakes" near Valparaiso, IN are generally pretty clear, but get weedy this time of year. Long lake has a 30' hole on the North end and Loomis goes to 50' in the SE end! Loomis is really busy on the weekends, but the motor size limit is very small making it safe for scuba. Not sure of Long lake.

I'll second Devil's Lake since I've lived just a few miles away most of my life! :D Probably the clearest lake in the 5 county surrounding area. The lakes around Madison as mentioned aren't too bad from what I gather, but they get some bad press sometimes due to pollution and excessive weed and algae growths at certain times of the year. If you do happen to make it up here, dive along the west bluff along the Tumble Rock Trail...you'll see an impressive array of fish and the water seems to be clearer there. I've been on a boat off the trail and seen 25 ft plus down on a good day. Good luck to you where ever you choose! -Matt-
