I stripped the blade and put a nice patina on it

Looks a bit better now I think.

I did mine all by hand and it was a total pain in the ass. It was worth it though and it only took me about an hour.

Looks good. Nice even patina.

Yup, I like it. I did the same with a brass wire wheel. Now she's a real user and doesn't keep all those coating scruffs.

What exactly is the purpose of the patina? Not asking to be a negative Nancy, just asking cause I can't really remember what the function is.

Yours looks very nice btw, enough so to make me contemplate stripping mine.

A patina is dark/black rust and it protects the blade from red rust and pitting.

You can force it or just let a 1095 blade live in the kitchen for a week.

I would think aesthetics and a slight resistance to rust. But would still need oiling.

Nice job, I've noticed it works better when splitting wood and slicing, seems to have less drag. I love mine stripped and patina'd.

I have never ever oiled my my BK2 since removing the finish, and forcing a patina once that is now long gone and a natural patina is in place and I have no rust at all. I just use it all the time.

Heya TxSxB...that looks great. Nice even patina. What did you use to force it? Some that I have seen look uneven (not the intentional designs, I love those!), but yours looks smooth! Nicely done!

Apple cider vinegar, in a tall bottle. It took about 45 minutes. The blade feels and cuts so much smoother now, it's definitely an improvement

yeah, what they said. poor man's parkerizing?

get that blade smooth, put on a smooth coating. viola.

i'm still waiting for someone to do a teflon coating :) or a TiO2 coating. that would be slick :)

phosphate bronze would be nice (and classic!) or a hard chrome ;>

If I knew someone that could do a Ti coating, my BK9 would have one. Alas, patina it is.

HeyTxSxB....

Nice job.....If you plan to use the blade for food prep try mineral oil or Vaseline....
