Cleaner Damaging DLC coating??

Just curious if I can cause damage to the coating. I know it stands for diamond like carbon which means it’s extremely strong. I use the benchmade blue lube cleaner with a q-tip to take off some adhesive from tape and everything else from the day. Every time I clean it the q-tip turns a brownish black. When cleaning other knives with no coating I don’t see this. Could the blue lube cleaner possibly be damaging the DLC coating and causing some to transfer onto the q-tip? Thanks

Cleaner won't damage DLC, at least, not in my experience - as long as it doesn't have abrasives in it (like flitz, not that it would damage it but it could polish it up a bit). I use Acetone on DLC all the time - DLC is inert so unaffected by chemicals. What knife is this you are referring to? What steel type?

Another thing I should point out... all DLC is not equal. I've tested over 20 different DLC coatings from all over the nation and they range from 600hv to 3500hv in hardness/wear resistance. Spyderco and MT use the one on the softer end of the spectrum for reference.

Thanks for the info. It’s the bladehq exclusive spyderco shaman with M4 steel. Been carrying for a couple weeks.

I was wondering if anyone did this, it seems a waste to use dlc and then not make it hard... please share which ones were on the high end 2500hv+ ?

Try just using some naptha (Zippo or Ronson lighter fluid). It will cut right through tape adhesive and won't damage any finishes. I have used it on guns and knives for many years and never hurt anything with it. Anything stronger and you might do some damage.
