What is good to get old enrusted dirt & gunk off old pocket knives., I presently use 0000 steel wool, Noxon polish & cleaner, MetaGlo polish, lots of elbow grease. Are there any time saving tricks short of sanding and grinding?

Not sure what works best, but I once came upon some folders that belonged to my grandfather, they had been sitting in a garage for about 30 years and had the rust to prove it.

What worked for me was to soak them in WD-40 for about a day, then just go to it with Q-tips, and steel wool.

Though I too wonder if some industrial strength rust remover or something might have made things easier...

Surface rust- Quickest is steel wool lots of rust remover (WD40 DO NOT USE INDUSTRIAL WAY TO STRONG THE THINNESS OF THE KNIFE). Also what can help are these steelwool things you can buy at most dollar stores that have soap built in to them the soap is pretty strong and will clean up most of the small spots after the big spots are gone.

Deep rust- Can't really remove without having to majorly change a party of the blade.
