So I bought a True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works labeled axe today dirt cheap, in ok shape but needs a bit of cleaning. I planned on removing the rust, putting rust preventitive primer on, and some paint, but is using a chemical like Naval Jelly ok on the metal? I use it for old paintball markers but am unsure if it'll damage the axe head. Thanks.

Hi there crazyotter. Most of the folks on here use a vinegar soak for the rust, works great. Is it a paper label or a stamped mark?

Regards

Ummm, I'm not sure what you mean by stamped but I'm guessing thats it, the lettering is etched into the metal. And ok, I could've done that but I'm impatient. Put naval jelly to it for 10 minutes, then wire brushed it. Got 95 percent of the rust off, and the head has a coat of rust stabilizing primer drying on it right now. Tired old handle has a coat of tung oil, it pretty much drank it. Not getting to fancy since I'm going to use this axe, but trying to restore it back up to good shape.
