Now I realize this isn't ideal not a long term solution. But would it clean the axe of wood and grit (so I can get it back on a whetstone) without causing damage? Speedy answers appreciated, ty!

It'll damage the edge, but if you're going to sharpen it anyway, that's not really a concern.

I usually clean mine with wd40 and a nylon brush.

I just bought my first dremel the other day. Hopefully it came with such a piece. For now I just bought a 3 set of nylon, stainless steel and I think copper brushes

WD40 or any light oil and 0000 steel wool save the SOS and Brillo pads for your pots and pans.

Opted for using a carbon steel brush for a dremel. It worked quite well! Also have 0000 steel whool pads and looking forward to trying these as well.

Edit: Would Mineral Oil be considered 'lite oil'?

Wire wheel or wire cup are the best choices.

Many more folks own corded or cordless power drills than own angle grinders. It's true though that a knotted wire cup brush on an angle grinder is ruthlessly efficient.
