This may be a dumb question, but last weekend I had used my Wave to cut a piece of barbed wire sticking out of the ground on the dirt road on my brothers chunk of land. Its on the Red River and so the typical red sand/dirt is everywhere, I never baby this thing but never after use have I had to do more than just a simple wipe down. Now when you open just about any tool you can feel and hear the sand grinding in the joints.

What is the best or easiest way to clean these areas? Is taking it apart necessary or is there another method to get in all the nooks and such?

I don't have a Wave, but I clean my Blast with warm water, soap and q-tips. You could also try using a very small screwdriver to clean the nooks and crannies.

You can do everything mentioned and still have that bone chilling gritting sound. I would recommend to try using compressed air, water, unawaxed floss, and toothpicks and if it's still gritty I'd disassemble it. They ate T6 Security Torx bits.

You can also open the tools, run it through the dishwasher, dry it real good with a hair dryer or heat gun, and hit the pivots with WD-40.

Just don't let Mrs. Ranger catch you doing it.
