cleaning a leek?

The action of my Leek got gunked up (not alot, but annoying) and I was wondering what was the best method for cleaning.

I've tried soaking in water, drying, then oiling. It has helped, but it still isn't 100%.

Is there a way to completely open up the knife?
Would a dilute H202 solution damage the knife?
Any other ways to get it cleaned (i think some apple juices got in there).

Take it completely apart, paying attention to what came from where so you can put it back together the same way. Handle screws and pivot are all you need to remove to open it up.

Once apart, I clean all metal with WD-40 and a toothbrush. Wipe it clean with a fresh rag. Then I use Flitz and polish every moving part around and including the pivot and blade area where it contacts the frame/liners. Polish the washers, too. While you're in there, make sure there's just enough grease in the torsion bar cavity to keep it from rattling. That's all you need in there. I use Hoppes or Miltec for a lube during re-assembly. If you want to do it the factory way, once you get it back together and have the pivot adjusted just where you want it, using a toothpick as an applicator, put just a little blue Locktite on the pivot screw before you put it back in and adjust it, and let it sit over night to allow it to harden.

A little tip I've picked up on setting the pivot: tighten it all the way down, and push the flipper just to the point the blade starts to open. If the pivot is tight enough, the SpeedSafe won't kick in, but the blade will be partially open. Then very slowly back off on the pivot until the SpeedSafe kicks in and it opens the rest of the way. I've found that this works on 99.9% of all SpeedSafes I've tinkered with.

If any of you have ever cooked leeks, you know what I'm talking about.

SPX's explanation sounds good to me though for that Leek. :D

Been there before...and I can tell ya that there's more than excitement in the air! You can smell that place 15 miles away when they're fixin leeks. :D Every way you could imagine: Boiled, fried, steamed, stewed, baked, grilled, fricasseed, you name it, they fix it. Leek sammiches, casseroles, salads, eggs n Leeks, sausage n Leeks, ham n Leeks, leeks n Leeks or just a big ol bowl full of em raw with a side of vinegar! YUM!

And you get to bring a little of the "festival" home with you, too! :D You'll sweat leek smell for the next few days. Just strip down outside when you get home, burn your clothes and put a fogger in your car. And don't be surprised when people get around you a week later and say "What's that smell"? :eek:

Did I miss anything spiral? :confused:

Maybe this is why I haven't fully felt the Leeks call...
 
I poisoned myself and my sister with potato and leek soup. I didn't know that you had to break the leeks off the base like celery then rinse them. I just chopped them up and threw them in the soup. I was on the toilet for two days. Good soup though.
