Cleaning a strop?

Did a search and couldn't find results. It's probable that the tapatalk forum app is not helping.

Anyway, I have a strop that I absolutely love. It's loaded with green compound which was applied evenly with a little heat from the stove. After a lot of use the nap is glazed over and has some random inclusions from being left on my desk. I'd like to clean it and reapply the same compound, maybe adding in a touch of oil this time around.

It's not horribly dirty so I don't think it should be too hard to prep, but I need advice on what to use and how to go about it.

Thanks, as always!

Moisten a paper towel with WD-40 or isopropyl alcohol, and wipe the surface of the strop with it. That'll take care of it. Some of the compound will also be removed, but there'll still be plenty left on the leather. Don't spray directly on the leather; just the moistened paper towel will be plenty.

Periodically wiping the strop with a dry paper towel even works quite well, if it's not too filthy. In fact, you might do this first, if yours isn't that dirty yet. A little hint of 'black' on the green strop is no big deal; the strop will continue to work for a good while. If you notice the strop becoming less effective, that's usually a sign that the swarf needs to be cleaned off of it.

If your strop uses the suede facing for the compound, coarse sandpaper (for wood) removes the compound and re-fluffs the suede nicely.
