I'm sure this has been discussed several times already, but couldn't find a thread by searching either the the traditional or maintenance/tinkering forum. Please feel free to direct me if you know where this has been discussed.

I just bought a carbon Schrade USA 34OT from a gun shop and it seems to be in fairly good shape with little wear. It definitely showing its age with a healthy patina and non-pitting rust. The worst rust seems to be in the nail nicks.

I want to know the best way to clean the knife up.

Most of my knives are bought new, and I just maintain them through my use. My other knives came from mygrandfathers, and I want to keep them as they are..........so haven't done much to clean them up.

Any advice or input on how to clean up an old knife would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Light mineral oil and a bamboo meat screwer, the point on the screwer is perfect for nail nicks. You can also reshape the scewers to fit the slots to get at internal rust. The scewer will get rid of rust and gunk without hurting the patina or the steel surface. I carve little chisels for in the slots.

Regards

Robin
