I am sure that there are reasons as to why this is a bad idea but it works form me and I thought I'd share.
While cleaning bronze washers you need to be careful not to deform them while rubbing on cloth (perhaps with a fine abrasive or polish and using a finger on a surface). I have found that placing them in water with a dental tablet (typically used on 'spare' teeth or mouth guard) removes all of the grease and staining without any mechanical application of pressure.
Then fully rinse and apply your usual lub/wax etc.
Food for thought.
