I am sure that there are reasons as to why this is a bad idea but it works form me and I thought I'd share.

While cleaning bronze washers you need to be careful not to deform them while rubbing on cloth (perhaps with a fine abrasive or polish and using a finger on a surface). I have found that placing them in water with a dental tablet (typically used on 'spare' teeth or mouth guard) removes all of the grease and staining without any mechanical application of pressure.

Then fully rinse and apply your usual lub/wax etc.

Food for thought.

Why would you waste your time doing this?
"Clean" washers will work exactly the same uncleaned.

Just wipe them off with a paper towel when the knife is apart and your done, you won't gain anything by cleaning them,I understand wanting to get any grit off of them but that's about it.

All fair statements. Typically I just wipe with alcohol, reassemble with KPL and good to go. The only advantage of the ‘soak’ is that they are bright without applying pressure on a surface that could deform the washer. I might do this for therapeutic reasons from time to time.

This maybe more useful for parents with young children (those days are long behind me). If you happen to be helping the tooth fairy prepare coins for under the pillow this method makes them look like new.
