I've been using "Comet Scrach Free Lemon scent" cleaner for my SM rods but they never really got them super clean. The white rods and grey had faint traces of metal on them after I was done scrubing them. I've tried a ceramic eraser I purchased from Excaliber as well as normal erasers. They are only good for taking off the intial metal build up, but not for a good "deep" cleaning.

I've heard lots of people talking about "Barkeepers Friend" and decided to go on a hunt around town to find some. I tried the local Albersons, but couldn't find any. I tried Homedepot and Lowes with no luck. I checked BKF's website and saw that they sell it at walmart and picked some up. I can happily say, that it cleans better then comet. The faint traces left behind with comet are cleaned away with "BKF". At $1.77 before tax, you can't really go wrong with giving it a try!

I've tried Hoppes #9, Mr. Clean sponges (Magic Eraser?), Simple Green, and somethign else, but I keep coming back to hot water, Comet, and a grey nylon pad. I will give that Barkeeper's Friend a try if I ever see some, though!

Bar Keepers Friend ( contains oxalic acid) or Cameo Aluminum & Stainless Cleaner (contains sulfamic acid). The acids in these two dissolve the micro particles of metal on the rod without hurting the ceramic. Both work tons better than Comet (contains chlorine). BKF and Cameo can be found at most large grocery stores on the same aisle as Comet.

Make a paste with a dab of water and dip a Scotchbrite pad or wadded paper towel in it, and scrub away. Rinse well. Works great, the rods come out sparkling white, with no grey streaks.

I've tried the hoppes #9 and the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, they don't work as good BKF.

Great product. I got it first for SS kitchen pots as recommended by the mfg. Can be found in grocery stores as mentioned by flashlife.

I haven't found BKF locally yet, but I did just pick up some Zud and I've got to say my Spyderco ultra-fine ceramic has never been cleaner
