Do you need to use barkeeper on them or just soapy water?

I don't find a harsh cleaner necessary to clean the diamond rods, they dont clog like ceramic stones can. I just use running water and wipe them with a cloth, dry and find that sufficient.

BKF is the best stone cleaner I've found. It removes the residual steel that most cleaners need a lot of elbow grease to get, the way I've seen it explained is that oxalic acid dissolves the steel residue, which most other cleaners won't do.

I know I've gotten better cleaning from BKF than just soap on my own diamond stones.

I clean my diamond hones with BreakFree CLP. Apply a light coat, let them sit for an hour (or overnight), then wipe clean.

I've always just rubbed some dishsoap on them, rinsed them off with warm water and let them dry. I've had my diamond stones for 8 years and it's always seemed to do the trick.

I've been preaching the virtues of Bar Keeper's Friend cleanser (BKF) for several years now. I found a new version of BKF at my local Hy Vee Grocery store and so far I've only used it on my Spyderco 302 Ultra-Fine stone and I'm here to tell you all I think it is just a tad better than the original from what I can ascertain so far. It's called "Bar Keeper's Friend" "superior Cookware cleanser & polish" . It comes in a silver colored can and they claim it has 50% more surfactant than the original BKF does. Let me know if any of the rest of you try it out because I would like to know if it is truly somewhat better. Albeit you can't go wrong with the original BKF for that matter.

I've actually had really good luck using Windex, believe it or not. Seems to work very well for my ceramics and diamond stones. If all of the metal filings/swarf/whatever doesn't come off, then I go to Barkeepers.
