I need some help with this one. Some of my folders have dirt in the pivot point where the blade swings out. How do i get the dirt out without screwing up the blade. I was thinkin that one of those cans that sprays air out would be good but i'm not sure. Let me know cause its really bothering me when i open my knives and here the sound of dirt grinding against the sides. Thanks

depending on the knife materials, I generaly pour in lots of dish soap and work the blade back and forth, then i rinse very well with a strong jet of water. While the knife is still warm from the rinse water, i dry it off and work MILITEC into the pivots, and wipe the blade with the MILITEC rag.

pipe cleaners don't work. i've tried them. about the soap and water, wouldn't it rust the blade?????

thats where the drying it off comes in. might use a hair dryer too, just be careful about too much heat.

After washing (using the methods above), I'll blow mine out with a compressor; then oil.

You shouldn't really have to worry about over heating with a hair drier. Unless you have some stag handles or something that is prone to warping.

I usually take mine all the way down for a really good cleaning.. but yea soap and water is a pretty good idea.. you can mix it up with some simple green for the soap if ya want.. on my aluminum ones I use cascade complete dish washer detergent and an old tooth brush.. that stuff is awesome and makes it look brand new.. but it makes your hands feel slippery for an hour after.. I think it has a mild acid in it to help aid cleaning.. it is like castrol super clean kinda .. anyway .. just remember to get it all the way dry and re oil and rust shouldn't be a problem.. also use very hot water for the rinse and it will pretty much dry out most of the water for ya..

A toothpick and some hot soapy water works for me, but then again I don't have much common sense.

Earlier i used a compressed air can, some WD-40, and gun lubricant. First the air for the moving parts. Then the WD. Then the air can and some papertowels. Then a few drops with the lubricant. And the WD cleans off the blade and the dirt in the handle as well (CRKT M-16). Opens as smooth as butter :D . I didn't wanna try the soap but i'll go dirty up a cheap knife and test it out. Thanks for the help anyways.

Oh ya, when I'm not washing, but I want to get dust and stuff out of my knife (especially tangs of Axis lock knives) I have a small brush I jacked from my brother's hair clippers. ;)

I like the cosmetics isle in the local drug store. I've found an assortment of make-up applicator brushes and swabs that are perfect for dusting and cleaning of knives.
