Cleaning Micarta?

I know most probably say "don't worry about it". But, seem like if I touch a brand new micarta slab it looks filthy within a few minutes. Is there any way to clean them?

Thanks!

I use a stiff plastic brush and some warm water and dish soap. Cleans them up like new!

Crazy I know. My hands were clean, picked up my nice new ESEE-5 and it was instant stains. Heck, the slabs on my 4 look black! Guess it's time to borrow my wife's toothbrush! :)

Heh, I've had the scales for my Izula now and I could swear they weren't black when I got them. :P

Soapy water is the way to go. I just scrub them with an old tooth brush, followed by a good rinse and let them dry.

I've heard of a few people using rubbing alcohol. I've tried it, it does work in a pinch just rubbing some over the surface area, but I think over time it could be a bit too harsh.

Soapy water though is the only true way to get them looking like new again I've found.

1. dye the scales black with rit fabric dye.
2. beat the shiit outta it out in the woods.
3. take pics and post it here and bask in the glory.
4. repeat step 2.

in my humble opinion ofcourse.

I'll have to give that all a try. Is there a good method to seal micarta? Seems like G10 doesn't stain. My RC-4 is smooth and black. Nothing like a little dirt, smoke and oil. We'll overdo for a cleaning. Guess I've always been skeptical to get them all soapy and wet due to the rust factor.

Sure, you can seal anything. Douse it in polyeurethane until it has a slippery sheen all over it. Doesn't make for much grip though.

Def oil from your hands...unavoidable really. Unless you seal it like you mentioned. I'm one of the crew that says "don't worry about it" because I kinda think dirty micarta has more character, sorta like when you see coated blades that have lots of it worn off.

Rubbing alcohol didnt work too well for me.The best thing I found was zippo fluid but soap and warm water work just about as well and cheaper. Hell I even used xylene to clean my rc-4s scales before but it turned the paper towels black because it was removing the coating from the blade.

Just soapy water and either a toothbrush or a sponge. You don't have to worry too much about the 1095 rusting because of its coating and as long as you make sure you dry it really well, you're good to go

Just dye them black or any other dark color, they end up looking black anyway...
