I have several stones that don't perform like they use to. It seems it takes alot more work to get the edge the way I want it than it used to. I have ceramic rods, dymond steel, Arkansas stones. How do you clean the crud off of them and get them back to normal. Do you just use a scotchbright and water? Thanks.

I use Scotchbrite pads with Ajax or Bon Ami. Hoppe's No. 9 gunpowder solvent also works well on ceramic rods.:D

I use comet,or soak in some bleach water (for ceramic) I also use one of those lansky eraser blocks in between scrubbings.

For the diamond steel,I usually just rinse with warm soapy water.

Not sure on the arkansas stones,I rarely use them any more but when I did I just kept them well oiled and wiped them down after use.

Hope this helps,
LOTO

Shotgun,Im don't know if its the best way but when my strops get loaded up I run over them with some rough sandpaper and apply a fresh coat of compound.

I've been cleaning my strops with saddlesoap and a sponge. Of course, I use the same grit compound to reload them.

I don't know if that's a good way to do it, but it seems to work.:)

I will tell you how my experiment turns out if you are interested. I bought some old, oily, but nice Arkansas stones. Now they are soaking in each bleach water in the sun. Next I am going to use my steam cleaner, and then set them in the sun to dry.
