just a quick question I have a Golden Spike 153UH and it has some dark spots where some type of fluid darken the sheath. maybe scentaway etc. Is there something that I can use to clean it out or should I replace the sheath? Where would I find such a sheath? Or maybe I should just darken all the leather what are your thoughts?

Darkening the sheath helps ( staining the leather ) I am sure on of the folks here could advise. As far as replacment funny you should mention that since it has just come up. You might want to read the last couple of entrys on the Schrade seconds thread. Take it easy Lt.

I've seen lots and lots of Schrade knife sheaths for sale at knife and guns shows, boxes of 'em. Also available on ebay, but it's difficult to configure your ebay search for 'sheath' only. As you write, might be possible to darken the entire sheath to match the spots, you could practice on the backside of it.

By the way, Jesse... It appears you are going to stay with us... fantastic, but a little ceremony here is in order. Our Don Luis will provide the socks and ElLobo the ping pong balls. I tap thee on the shoulder three times with my blunt tipped Schrade Extreme Bomb Tech Knife, and you are an official member of 'Uncle Henry's Lost Souls'. It appears that you, like Rev jch, are also a man of the cloth, so now we have 2 chaplains. The Schrade forum here continues to thrive...

Well, I'm no leather master, but I'd agree with LT. A dark leather dye should work. I guess I'd worry about if the leather had any type of finish on it. Generally that is put on to give the leather some type of water/stain resistance. If you have ever tried to stain wood where glue has set up, or stain or dye anything with a waxy buildup on it, you know what I mean. It just doesn't take.

I don't think it can be cleaned satisfactorily. I would dye it.

yup good advice as usual from you guys. I will look for a quality darkener or maybe just try rubbing in some mink oil. Any other suggestions.

Before you go to the mink oil, which should darken it for sure, try some mineral/baby oil. Inexpensive and will SLIGHTLTY alter the color of most leather. Light coat, let it dry a couple of hours, then assess the next steps. Good stuff to lubricate with, as well.

JMHO.

Since we are recomending oils, I´ll say that I like castor oil, as sold in paste form at shoe/leather shops (at least in Mexico) it conditions and darkens te leather, neats foot oil is also good stuff IMHO.

Leather dye is inexpensive and available in many colors, if nothing else works and you don´t mind a black sheath, black leather dye would likely take care of it. I´ve never tried it myself, but I know that a black leather dye can be made by leaving some steel wool in white vinegar for a while.
