I am building a Puukko and using a reindeer antler spacer. While sanding it all flush Imanaged to fill the pores of the antler with a slurry dark wood and brass.
Is there to remove this or to dye the antler black? Any help appreciated.
Thanks Ron

a slurry?
you are not grinding it dry??
you should be if not..
if the pores are full of what was a wet a slurry you'll have to grind down past it.
if you grind dry you can blow them out maybe and after use super glue to fill and seal them , then finish it up, or stabilize the antler before hand..just my 2 cents

there shouldn't be any pores unless you have sanded too deep and gone into the pith. if you have sanded into the pith there isn't much that can be done besides take the handle apart and start over. if it is just a little surface dirt, take a piece of 400 grit wood sandpaper and resand the antler to romove the brass.

Yea it was a slurry.I used Thuya Burl wood for a handle, very oily wood which
loads the sandpaper.I found that wet sanding with mineral spirits solved that problem. Now I know better. It's at the point where I think it would look better
black if there is any way I could dye it.Guess I got alot to learn. Thanks for all replies,Ron

I'm thinking reindeer antler is more in line with moose, a little less dense over all. and a lot of pith compared to white tail,, the mineral oil is good for the antler but just for soaking
I was thinking you were maybe using water:eek:
brass will get into everything that is not finished so if you are careful and try to finish that by it's self keeping the runoff to it self it helps.

leather would be the same deal or worse, I sealed this leather with super glue
everything is dry sanded up to 2000 grit and the brass was buffed with green chrome rouge (FIRST) and then the rest with white rouge
this is White tail and you can see wher the drop tine was, that is pithy ..
