Hey Bill,

I had my AK up for about a month, which I took out today. I had some rust on the blade which must mean I have some dirt in my scabbard. How can I clean it out without hurting anything?

Ben, just because you got some rust on the blade does not necessarily mean that the inside of your sheath is dirty. Khuks are prone to rust if not properly treated with some type of rust inhibitor before being put away. I'd be willing to bet that if you polished the blade, coated it well with some type of oil after each time you use it, that you'd not be bothered by rust problems again.

Ben.

You can always wash your scabbard. I did that almost to all of my Khukuri scabbards. I just take a bucket full of water - put some detergent - start washing it. First I wash the outer part which is a Buffalo hide - acually I brush it. Then, I wash the internal part - normally I use a Good Morning Towel - push it inside the scabbard using a steel ruler; then I pull it at one go - I do that few times. Finaly I wash it with plain water (sometimes - when I think necessary I used warm water) & I dry it under the sun. After it was dry - I apply KIWI & shine the scabbard. BTW, I love to apply dark brown colour KIWI to it.

Pakcik Bill might have a different method - maybe the one practices by our Gorkha friends.

Thanks mohd,

I was afraid to wet the leather and I was afraid I would damage the wood inside. I'll do that. Thanks.

I use WD40 instead of soap and water -- spray it down into the scabbard using the little red nozzle that comes with the can and then put a rag on a stick and rout around in the scabbard until the rag comes out clean.

Try holding the scabbard upside down and blow out with compressed air. This is the easiest thing to do before sticking a small rag in as Bill suggest.
