Ok, so my Hawk gets used a lot, and one of the side effects is that I end up with pitch and chunks of wood and bark stuck to it. How do I go about getting it off with out taking the patina off also?

Thanks for any advice.

as an arborist, i get that stuff stck to me constantly, and honestly, as weird as it sounds, the 2 best things for getting it off of me are peanut butter, or margerine, havent tried either on a blade, but cant see why it wouldnt work

I've used Kerosene in the past, which seems to work pretty well on my axes. I re-apply an oil/wax coat right after.

Thanks for the help, the alcohol worked like a charm. Didn't try the other ways, mostly because the alcohol was ez to grab out of the bathroom.

WD-40 works the best, wipes pitch right off and lubes the blade.

Oh wow.... I misunderstood, I was thinking yall ment use the alcohol on the blade :D. As much as I love the hawk I'm not going to be sharing my Captain Morgan with it.:D

HA HA!

You wouldn't want to do that anyway. Alcohol and axes don't mix is what I was always told. At least keep your axe sober...safer that way!

On a serious note, I agree on the WD-40. I have also used RemOil which works great, but is definitely more expensive. I just have it around for guns, so sometimes I use it for other things too.

There are also those big eraser-things, but I can't for the life of me remember what they are called. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

EDIT: I guess that's a little vague. The "eraser things" are those rubber bars that are impregnated with some kind of polishing compound. A lot like the "erasers" you use on a sandpaper belt.

Thanks again for all the help. Ill try the WD-40 this week when I get back. I used the rubbing alcohol then gave it a once over with gun oil... I have no idea what kind it was, it seems to work well on the guns so it should do ok on the hawk.

Its the mineral spirits in the WD-40 that does the trick, so straight mineral spirits would also work. The WD-40 is easier to deal with, though. I spray that stuff on just about everything I can catch.
