Hey blade enthusiasts
So moneys tight but I do have a Walmart gift card that works at Walmart.com

The question is: What are some good blade cleaners that I can find on Walmart.com?

What are some good oils for longevity while my collection sits for 6 months or a year? Once again has to be from Walmart.com

The closest thing I found were certain gun cleaning/ maintenance products- are those even good for knives?

Thanks for any help!

Most gun cleaning/lubricating products will be good for knives as well. Hoppes #9, CLP, Tuf-glide, etc.

If I were going to store knives for six months to a year I would leave them dry and store them in an air-tight case with some desiccant packs. I see both Pelican and Apache cases on Walmart.com. Both are high-quality air-tight cases. the Apache cases are less expensive but still high-quality.

Oils can change dramatically over time. They can become gummy, or dry into a crust.

Speaking of which, I have to disagree strongly with K.O.D. above on Hoppes #9. I used to use Hoppes #9 in my switchblades, and in only a few months it dried into a hard, white crust. It was a real pain having to disassemble all of my switchblades and remove that crust from every surface it touched. Needless to say, I stopped using it.

Some gun cleaning products contain compounds to dissolve or remove copper fouling left by clad ammo in gun barrels. This might include some of the Hoppe's #9 solvent products for cleaning guns. If so, I'd avoid those in any knives with brass hardware (an alloy of copper) or copper hardware or bronze, as some have. Things like brass liners, pins or pivots might be damaged. I seem to recall reading of such issues here on the forum before (EDITED: see link below), with some gun-cleaning products.

Something like Hoppe's gun oil, on the other hand, shouldn't be a problem.

I also would suggest just keeping the knives clean & dry, and sealed up. I've used clean, new Zip-Loc bags to store a lot of my knives. I cleaned the blades with a wipe of Windex to remove any finger oils & other dirty stuff, then let them air out for a few minutes before putting them into the bags (rolled up before sealing, to force air out). A lot of mine have been sealed up as such for 15-20 years now, without issue. I'm certain you can find Zip-Loc bags and Windex at Walmart. And I do have a bottle of Hoppe's Gun Oil (and CLP, and maybe even Rem Oil), which I bought at Walmart. ;)
