Cleaning rayskin and wrapping

I had the opportunity to purchase a very nice, used Japanese-style knife. It feels great in the hand.

How would one go about cleaning the epoxy-impregnated, cord-wrapped rayskin handle on such a fine Japanese-style blade?

Over time, things have gotten a little soiled...the menuki has become a bit tarnished.

Is it possible to do the job well or would it be better to send it back to the maker for refurbishment?

Many thanks and a happy new year to everyone.

It may not be a good idea to try to clean it. If you unwrap it it will never be the same. I don't really see how the epoxy coated wrap would get dirty since the epoxy is impervious to everything. The tarnish on the menuki coud also be patina? Maybe you should contact the maker first to see what he says.

I have heard that if the handle is sealed with epoxy you can just clean the handlewith soap and water and a tooth brush. However if you are unsure if the seal on the handle is tight still I would suggest that you contact the maker and then go with his suggestion.

The maker may refurbish the handle for you for a price.
