I found an old neglected Nicholson File and I want to fix her up. I used it already to sharpen my lawnmower blade and it worked very well. I need to get light rust off of it and clean the "teeth". What would be the best way to go about doing this? Would Navel Jelly get the rust off, or would that harm the teeth? I'll try to get a picture up soon! Thanks!

I've heard of people using battery acid to make old files cut again, but never tried it myself.

Recently got ahold of a bunch of 50 year old Sheffield files. Most had rust that was too deep to remove with a wire brush, but otherwise they are unused.
I put them in plastic bucket with some water and a couple of bleach tabs, and let 'em sit overnight. Next morning water was orange with rust, the files were clean, and had acquired a nice grey-blue patina. Vinegar also works, but don't mix together with bleach.

Would a Dremal wire wheel damage the teeth if I used it to get off the heavy rust and dirt? Then I'll maintain it with the file brush/card.
