I used to use Comet, which worked ok - then I tried Barkeepers Friend powdered cleanser. Works a hundred times better, fast and easy. Just wanted to pass that along...

You should try a pencil eraser as well, it removes the metal in 2secs, it still leaves a little like gray mark but it cuts as good as new.

I was in the same boat...BKF works the best IMHO.

I've tried just about everything (except Barkeepers Friend!), but I keep returning to Comet and a grey nylon pad. I will try some Barkeepers when I see it at the store and think of it, but right now the comet does the job just fine.

Barkeeper's Friend is good stuff. When I'm lazy, I throw them in the top shelf of my dishwasher.

Both of those work great! I love the Barkeeper's Friend on ceramic rods, so quick it will amaze you.

Barkeeper's Friend is just about the same as Comet only a finer grit abrasive. I found the Barkeeper's friend in a bottle, just shake it up, drip a little on the stone and go.

I believe the effectiveness of Barkeeper's Friend has to do with a chemical reaction more than with its abrasive qualities. It contains oxalic acid which seems to react quickly with fine metallic particles. I've never used BKF but do use ZUD, also with oxalic acid, which is available locally. It cleans ceramic rods with almost zero elbow grease

A little spit n shine...
Soap and water works for me...
I tend to wipe them down.. After every couple uses.. Seems they cut better that way..

I want to try Bar keepers friend on my Sryderco stones, but I can never find it. Does Wallmart carry it?

I want to kiss whoever came up with the eraser trick (ok maybe not). Bought those abrasive erasers that can deal with pen ink, takes the gunk right out of my ceramic stones.

+1 eraser

I just tried Barkeepers friend....... Amazing, it worked like a charm, it removed a years worth of junk with little to no effort. My stones cut so much better now. I even used it on my DMT stones with the same results. I should have tried this long ago. Thanks for the awesome tip!

I go high tech and use an ultrasonic cleaner with H2O and a little dish detergent. No effort at all then wipe them once or twice with Scotchbrite.
