Cleaning tape residue from leather

I've come into possession of a Kabar whose leather sheath at one time has some turns of duct tape wrapped around it. The tape is gone now but of course the tape residue remains. I was about to wipe it down with Goo Gone but noticed that the label indicated that it was not for use on leather. Well hell. I imagine that this is not a common problem but was wondering if perchance any of you had had occasion to get tape residue/tar/gum/etc off of leather and what you found to be effective. I'd like to be able to look at that old leather without the white ghost of duct tape past getting in the way.

Go to your local auto parts store and get some stuff made for cleaning leather car seats. It should work just fine.

Acetone. Available in most hardware and paint stores including Wal Mart. It should literally dissolve the tape residue and also should evaporate very quickly. Do not rub hard as you will burnish the leather. A couple of cotton swabs would be the best for application. In order to keep from having "water stain shadows" you may have to treat the entire sheath

Damn Paul - Thanks for the tip here - I will grab a bottle in order to get stuff off my leather. I have been wondering about this one for a time - and tried alcohol - but it really didn't work well.
