how would one go about cleaning this stone?

I've sharpened a few knives on it, all carbon blades.
Now instead of being grey, it is a rust brown/red in color.
Also the outside ends (that don't see much action) are still grey in color, and are a good bit coarser than the middle (brownish/red), would this be from the stone is loaded up or would this just be the initial wearing the new off?

I scrubbed it with some dawn and hot water, but that didn't seem to help.

Thanks in advance for your advice and input.

The coarseness at the ends is just the as-fired surface finish still being present, and will vanish in time. The best way to eliminate rust staining from carbon steel is to prevent it outright by rinsing off the stone after use. If any swarf is left on the damp stone after sharpening, you'll naturally get staining, and it won't readily come off. It doesn't really affect the stone, or its sharpening qualities; it just isn't pretty.

Ahh thank you sir, as long as it's works I'm not worried about pretty.
Just wanted to make sure it wasn't loading up, and something I needed to jump on right away.

Yep, mine is stained after extensive use, I could show pics if you wanted. And it still works awesome! :-) I do rinse it off quickly after each sharpening, but I don't even use soap anymore. It doesn't take much maintenance.
