Can anyone recommend to me how to properly clean the head... mostly the sides does to rubbing with the trees I just helped cut down, there are some nice scratches on my new axe.

Also, the paint, or protective coating, that came on my axe head is coming off. Any ides for how to fix that?

Thanks, Axe Gods!

if it were mine, i would strip that coating off anyway. an axe is a tool so its going to get banged up. i wouldnt worry too much about scratches. i doubt that coating is for an other purpose but asthetics.

Take it to the sink and scrub the side of the axe with your wife's green Scotchbrite pad and some dish soap. Rince clean and dry.

When she catches you doing this at the kitchen sink, say "but honey, I didn't think you'd mind. I love you." Might get you off.

You can get various grit 3M Scotchbrite wheels for your drill, (I think they're cheaper than elbow grease).

A $5 bottle of bluing or browning solution will also keep it a bit more rust resistant. Not a whole lot, but enough that your occasional TLC oilings are more effective. Looks good too, especially if you've polished it up nice with a scrubby wheel.

I have used warm water, dish soap and a small nylon brush. This strips the oils, so I always reapply a light coat of oil after cleaning as well. Rubbing alcohol can get sticky tree sap off.

I use 400 grit sandpaper (hand rubbed) to give my GB's a nice satin finish. It takes off all the gunk very easily. Then wipe with an oil soaked rag.
