Was left in a leather case since the past 25-30 years, some pitting on the blades. What would be the best way to clean this up without hurting it (not talking about monetary value, it has very little, just trying to keep it from degrading further)?
Clean it well with a solvent cleaner (CRC) and then oil it. Work it until it feels free. Repeat if needed.
Lightly clean up the blades with 800 grit. Do the bolsters and scales with 800 grit and buff by hand with a soft cloth. I use the 3M paper sets for jobs like this because the don't leave scratches and J-hooks.
