How do you guys clean your blades while you are in the field? Obviously if we are home, we can have soap, hot water, and even a scrub pad if needed, but not while your out in the dirt. And I am talking more along the lines of tree sap and things that are hard enough to get off when you are home with items mentioned earlier.

A small can of WD40. If removing tree sap is your goal, you are likely to need some kind of solvent.

I always wipe the blood off on my opponent's clothes before putting it back in the sheath....

hot water and sand will clean off tree sap.
hot water and a scrap of cloth or the inside of some tree bark will clean just about anything else off.

yeah hot water and sand will work and I use some hand sanitizer towelettes if I am going to do food prep with a knife.

moist... towelette.
see the chicken part.
on the luncheon cart.
moise... towelette.

WD40 isn't food-safe, but Ballistol is.

I always keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in a pocket and usually have a paper towel or two ....... If doing food prep or skinning I clean the blade but usually leave sap and other stuff until I am at Base Camp i.e.,my house...... The sanitizer is aa decent fire starter un less you re below 20 degrees F. ......... Mineral oil( Ballistol) is a good sap solvent and food safe as well........

Usually, if i need to clean a knife in the field, it's to rid it of blood and goop from having field dressed an animal. Water from my canteen and a bandanna takes care of enough of it to see me home. :)

We have a lot of pine and oak up here, which tend to get my blades sappy when I'm batonning or cutting. I've found some nail polish remover, a paper towel, and some elbow grease will get everything off. After that I run it under some hot water, wipe it off with a paper towel and voila! Clean.

Usually my pants leg till I get home.

For food prep, I use my other knife. I always have more than one fixie on me.

Baby wipes. If that doesn't take care of it then I use my fingernail. If worse than that it will just have to wait till it gets the spa treatment at home :-P Always dry it well and give it an oil bath.

try "great stuff wipes"...

they have all kinds of skin friendly solvents that remove *stuff*

then wipe down with mineral oil

I use finger nail polish remover that come in a sponge that are in single package.I have found will remove even the thickest pine sap and also help start fires.
Thanks,
Michael

I've nothing new to add. Sand is an excellent cleaner when paired with water. I've been meaning to try Balistol ever since Moose muttered something about it, gotta find it local. Hand sanitizer is a good thought. A good bandana, shemagh works well.

Thanks guys, I am in southeast texas, so yeah, there is a reason they call it "The Pineywoods"...all that darn pine sap can wreak havoc on a blade!
