Howdy! I had a question about the Titanium Salsa. Is the Ti version a framelock? Does it have the same clip as the aluminium ones? and finally is it make in Taiwan? I am most interested in the last question and would like a 100% positive answer on this one. I wanna get one but not sure if I can stand Taiwan stamped on my blade.:(

The Ti Salsa has a "framelock," actually an integral compression lock.

The Salsas are being manufactured in Taipei, Taiwan. Spyderco is trying out a new manufacturer with this model.

Nice knife... Personally I wouldn't mind the "Made in Taiwan" stamp at all. All of my CRKT products have been outstanding, and in fact I have had more QC issues with "Made in U.S.A." knives than any others. My Starmate had to go back due to vertical blade play, and my Buck Strider is so bad that it's almost laughable. The lockup is so poor that it would probably fold if I tried to use it for anything.

Fit and finish on certain Benchmade and Emerson models is nowhere near that of CRKTs and the Asian-made Spydercos. Take a 1st-gen Viele up against a CQC-7 and tell me why the liners, backspacer and scales are so uneven on the Emerson, and the liners and backspacer of the Viele look as if they were milled from a single piece of metal. No, I would have no qualms about buying that Ti Salsa, but not because of Taiwan -- the "Cobra Hood" is the deal killer here. I can't stand it at all. What's wrong with a good 'ol Spydiehole? "Innovation" for the sake of innovation is not always a good thing. If it ain't broke...

Wow 44, I haven't heard anyone else w/ that opinion. I can see why one wouldn't want to fix something that "ain't broke", but when I handled the protos, the cobra hood was absolutely killer.

well, I'm mixed after having purchased a Salsa a couple of weeks ago, the cobra hood makes it easier to open fast because it requires less precision on where you place your thumb.

According to Sal, the Cobra Hood is basically experimental right now, and the Salsa and ATR are the platforms being used for its introduction and trial. How/where/if it will see further use will depend upon how it is received by the market. Personally, I think it will be especially useful on MBC folders.

Here's a look at the "Made in Taiwan" stamp:

Tapping and threading the blade so we can screw the hood into the blade was not so easy as it might appear. The blade is also notched to accept the hood providing a better fit and stronger fasten.

I have found with craftsmen of any type, that it is the person, and not the country that insures quality on the level that we require it. Both the skill and the passion are required and finding the man or woman with both is difficult. We have tried many makers all over the world. Spyderco is very difficult to please. We do our own testing to insure that our standards are not compromised. With that in mind, it is difficult for us to find makers. When I think that I can get the skill, passion and commitment from a maker, I will give them an opportunity where ever they are.

The Salsa has some unique features that have never been done before. This requires missionary work which is always expensive. Figuring out how to do something in production that has never been done before offers its challenges.
