Has anyone put a clearcoat on their pocket clips to keep the black finish looking sharp?

I was thinking of putting a coat of Tester's model paint clearcoat on my Benchmade and Spyderco clips, but I'm wondering if it will get sticky or start to yellow.

It should work in theory. I usually just carry my knives until the paint on the clip gets scratched up, then I sand off the rest and polish the clip.

I replied to your thread in the Spydie forum. I believe it should be fine if you give the paint enough time to properly cure. I personally like to strip the coating off of my clips and leave the bead-blasted finish.

I'd rather polish the paint off like a lot of people do. Black paint is about the worst coating out there for pocket clips; it chips off so easily. Or you could try to buy knives that have Parkerized clips. You mentioned Benchmade; they'll send you a parkerized clip for your knife for free if you ask them.

Don't think it'll show yellow over black, but I doubt that Testors will do much to protect the paint on the clip. Unless you use a stainless clip, there's always going to be wear marks if you carry it.

Personally I like dings, scratches and other marks on my knives. It gives them character, and show's they've been used. I give them a good cleaning and lubing every so often and that's about it..

i have a duracoat finish on one of my mini grip clips and it holds up very well. it is the same duracoat used on firearms.

You may try to coat it with clear epoxy. I just use black 3M Stair Step tape on mine. The 3M adhesive on the back of this stuff STICKS!:)
