What is the general carry situation in FL - specifically, I'll be in the Clearwater area? My two possible carries will be a Spyderco Delica, or my Gunting. Both have 3" blades, but the Gunting "looks" a little more "evil":)

Anyone know of any possible problems with these blades?

TIA

Unless someone else checks in with specific knowledge of a city ordinance that would apply, I'd feel fine carrying either one of those in Florida.

However, if it were me, I would carry the Gunting with the clip in plain view at all times.

I wore a small fixed blade (discreetly) in Clearwater this January, and didn't have any problems. If you're there, take the time to go to the Crystal River (an hour north) and go swimming with manatees in the hot springs. Definitely one of the best experiences of my life.

j.e.moore -

I'm sure you've already checked FL Knife Law at Bernard Levine's site, but essentially a "common pocketknife" is excluded from the definition of a weapon for the purposes of carrying concealed. Not shown on Mr. Levine's site, but found in a little digging through case law, is the definition of a "common pocketknife". From what I could find in case law, it appears that a folding knife under 4" blade length is considered to be a "common pocketknife". Also to be considered is whether or not the knife has guards or other characteristics common to a "fighting" knife.

So, to make a long story short - as another poster said, that Delica could probably ride in your pocket unclipped, but the Gunting should probably have the clip in plain view.

Please note: I'm not a lawyer, just a former resident of Florida who did a little digging, so take the above FWIW.

Have fun in FL!

Matthew
