You know, with all this cult of personality surrounding Mr. Stamp, why has it nobody approached him about designing and having made what he would deem the perfect all around knife for EDC? I mean, the guy re-profiles blades, has his opinions of the best steels and how they are forged, what can be improved, blah, blah, blah... Why hasn't Cliff either recommended what he views as his perfect knife or have it made? If there was such a knife, I would buy one knowing that it met with the extensive testing and refinement of Mr. Stamp's approval. It would have to be something that is economically affordable ( under $100??? ) and easily mass produced. Does Mr. Stamp even have what he percieves as the perfect all around EDC knife? It would be interesting to know what his top recommendation is.

I think Cliff is smart enough to realize there's no perfect knife, just the search for one :) Cliff does often make task-specific recommendations for what he thinks are great knives; you might describe a particular task (e.g., camping in these types of woods with this kind of expected usage) and see what he thinks. That would make an interesting thread for sure!

I'm not someone who would embrace a cult of any kind, but I have a lot of respect for Cliff. A lot.

From the large amount I've read from Cliff here and there, my impression is much the same as Joe. I do think Cliff has a liking for Busse's also, although 'perfect all around EDC' is another matter again.

If Cliff ever made a knife, I don't expect it would have any frills, but I'd buy one. Even if it were quite a bit over $100.

Such a knife does not exist. Cliff will never be satisfied with a mere "knife". Until a knife becomes available with a blade made from Unobtanium, that is! :D

On a serious note, I sure would like to see what he considers the ultimate available knife though.

As Joe said I don't think that Cliff thinks that there is a perfect all around knife, only great task specific knives. As far as currently available knives go, I beleive he has spoken: Busse Combat.

Himalayan Imports...Make all sorts, and until you've tested one of these unsung heroes, youu won't believe. it. It'll stand up to what Busse blades will, and more. I'd do the test, if I could afford some Busse blades. I've used and abused a wide variety of HI products, and they have yet to fail me.

If Busse ever get the folder of the ground and do it well, I think that would come close!

Alternativly the spearpoint Strider folder GB?:)

They have, knives, axes , tomahawks etc. . In general I don't like the level of hype which exists in the industry as a whole and there are very few manufactures or makers that I would work with in such a manner.

On a regular basis I talk to makers and manufactuers about steels, geometry and overall performance based on design. Some times these suggestions get implemented sometimes they are ignored.

It is now basically a hobby and I enjoy the freedom it has - I don't have much of a drive to make it "work". Plus I have freedom I would not have if I was actually selling my own knives, I would not exactly be an inbiased observer then.

In regards to knives I thinking highly of, yes, the Busse Combat and Swamp Rat companies are two. If you want a heavy use knife these are the way to go based on what I have seen. There are however other catagories of knives and bladewere in general where others will stand out more readily.

me: How's it goin', eh? Beauty. I was reading some other threads by you, Cliff, and I noticed you picked a Phil Wilson, Battle Mistress, and Himalayan Imports Kukri. It was very interesting. I always considered a Thomas Johanning when I first read about it although the price scared me away. Maybe someday. I picked up the Arlee Niemi Megaladon based on your favourable review of how strong the lock was. That helped me make a choice on a most excellent knife. I have since picked up several knives and it was all based on your excellent reviews and tests. You have influenced me to have seriously considered a Becker and Swamp Rat. Nice to know Canucks are thorough and demand the best for their work. Keep up the good work and will continue to be entertained by your torture tests. Thanks for doing a great job to inform all knife enthusiasts. I hope that a Cliff Stamp tactical EDC will come out one day. That would be very cool!
