Many of the unforgiven knives were made by a maker named JP Moss, including Clint's main knife. JP is gone now, but he did make some copies for sale that show up rarely.

Edit - it looks like this - https://www.arizonacustomknives.com/products/1043526/ . Sometimes he also made a small hunter with it.

How do I add photos? There doesn’t appear to be a way to do this.
My husband was a huge prop collector and owned collections from lots of movies over the years. I’m just working through items. He was meticulous at keeping records/coas however some have gotten separated hence my post.

I thought the knives in Unforgiven were pretty authentic looking knives for the era. It's my favorite western, along with True Grit.

Welcome to Bladeforums db86

There are two ways to post photots-

1. You need to sign up at a free photo hosting site like Imgur, create an account, then insert the BBCode that the hosting site assigns to any individual picture in your post here on the forum.

2. Purchase a forum membership that allows you to post pictures directly from your computer. It's one of the benefits of a paid membership. To learn more about paid memberships click on "Paid Subscriptions" in the blue banner across the top of the screen.

As far as your situation with the knives, I don't know how you could go about getting COA's, but if the knives are custom made, and if the makers are still alive, you might be able to contact them and get a letter from them authenticating the knives and what they were made for (like a Clint Eastwood movie).

Yes. With a Gold membership you can post pics from your computer, you can ask the forum what a knife or knives are worth, you can sell knives and other stuff on The Exchange, you can exchange private messages with other forum members, and a few other things.

To find The Exchange click on "Knife Exchange" on the far left of the blue banner. But before posting anything on The Exchange it's very important to read The Exchange Rules so you don't run afoul of the Moderators and get your listings deleted. Those rules can be found in a light blue banner across the top portion of the screen on the first page of The Exchange section.

I'm pretty familiar with Clint Eastwood movies, and I always notice knives in movies, but I don't recall seeing either of those knives in any Eastwood movie. I suppose it's possible they were prop knives carried by extras.

Maybe someone else will recognize them.

Without knowing the makers I think it would be very difficult to obtain COA's.

Many thanks - I’m not sure which movies they come from someone just mentioned Clint Eastwood as a possibility as my husband owned guns etc from them also. Might these have any value if sold as just knives?

I don't think they are of any great value. Without some kind of makers mark, and without knowing who made them, I don't believe anyone would pay much for them, if anything. I don't see any sign of a makers mark on either knife.

The bowie is made from a file, but overall the knife looks a bit crudely done. The stag handle on the other one looks nice, and a lot of people like stag, but the knife itself does not appear to be anything special. That one looks like a hunting dagger style, but the blade is in rough shape with gaps between handle and guard.

Of course taste is a very individual and subjective thing, so it's possible that someone might be willing to buy them, but again, I don't think they would pay much for them.

Those are my opinions. It's possible that others might feel differently.

Second one is made from a Scottish dirk kit blade. They could be props, but as mentioned, I don't recognize them as major props. Sometimes when prop houses sell off excess inventory they'll know that it was in "xyz" film/films, but they don't know whether it was actually used by a star or just grabbed off a props table to outfit an extra. You might try - http://www.themoviepropforum.com/ or https://www.therpf.com/forums/ , and see if anyone recognizes them, as those are two big prop collect forums.

Otherwise you just list them with what you know and you take your chances :( :). The stag one might surprise.

many thanks for all - sorry for sounding a little stupid here but which knife is the 'stag' - the one with the 'white' handle or the other one? which one is made from a scottish dirk kit blade also?

The long skinny one with the tan sheath has the stag handle (yes, the one with the white handle). Stag is deer antler. I'm sure that's the one that tltt was referring to as the "Scottish dirk".

And there's nothing stupid about your questions. None of us were born knowing any of this stuff, we all had to learn from somebody :) .

I was curious what the one used in Josey Wales when he cuts his hand to clasp the hand of Ten Bears to seal an agreement. Was that one also used earlier in the movie when he cuts a tobacco or jerky or when he cuts the chords free of the Comancheros prisoners?
