Clip broke

So, during a class where we were wearing trainer enduras, rolling around on the mats doing grappling in street clothes, on the day that I bought my own trainer, the clip broke! And I hadn't even paid for it yet. Which makes me wonder, how often are the clips on Spyderco's breaking?

Anyone else had them break? I'm thinking that whatever clip material is used is too brittle and something that bends rather than breaks would be preferable. I realize most people aren't grappling with their training knives, but that's one situation where I'd really like my knife not to be knocked out of commission. I won't feel as comfortable with wearing my real endura again until I figure out a better clip.

Hi Phaedrus.

Sorry for your inconvenience.

Do you know which model it was? Endura3 or Endura4

What part of the clip broke?

Can you send it in?

sal

It's an Endura4 trainer. Clip broke just below the screws before the clip flares away from the blade. I can't post a pic here but I'll email it to you. BTW Sal, I'm amazed at your dedication to Spyderco and your customers, thank you.

Sal, I can't send a picture through email either on Bladeforums, want to email me an address where i can send the scanned image?

I'm at zander.hill(at)gmail.com

If you'll call Warrantee & repair on Monday, they can send you a new clip.

A picture is nice, but if you could drop both pieces of the clip in the mail, we can get a better "scope" on what happened.

This is the first clip breakage on the latest generation clip. We'd like to study the break and determine if a mod is necessary.

Thanx for the kind words. I try to stay close to my designs and their "real world" use.

I'll track down the other piece of the clip and send it out your way on monday.

For the record... your dedication to Spyderco is what sets it apart from other companies. I can honestly say I've never heard anything other than praise and appreciation for your efforts, Thanks Sal. And once you start putting a wave on all your knives, you'll have the knife market to yourself.

While I have never had a clip break, I have had several pull out at the screws, stripping the holes and making them clipless. For this reason I only buy older models with the FRN clips that are built into the scale. SPydercos aren't the only models that have done this, it is just a greater diappointment because they are my favorite knives for folders. Sigh.

Good customer service response from Spyderco, thanks, they're sending the replacement clip and I've sent in the broken one for analysis.

in my experience spyderco's clips never ever break

maybe i's just the ones on the trainer-knives? ( )

well, I've never experienced it before, but I certainly did this time on the 4th generation endura. And I figure the trainer and normal model have the exact same clip.

As a side note, I rolled around in class with that same endura trainer again (using the clip off my waved endura) and bent the clip a little offline but didn't snap it. I might have caught it at a very strange angle to snap it the first time. Hopefully Sal will stop back by and give a debriefing of what the Spyderco experts see in the broken clip.

When you "roll around class" is it on mats? wood floor? Tatami? rubber/foam sectional mats?

My Brother had the intergral Clip on an older Model Rescue break While th knife was in his bunker coat pocket on a fire call. He was leaning his full weight over a ladder at the time to get to a victim.

He put a Snap link type clip through the lanyard Hole and now hangs the knife from his Coat which he finds gives him easier access anyway.

That knife has been activley used for Fire/Rescue for over 10 years and is still going strong.

I've only had one break. It was on my first endura,a frn clipped one back in the early '90's.
A simple call to Spyderco ,and it was off to warranty repair.

There they removed the remaining frn clip stub,& replaced it with a metal clip.
They sharpened it too, free of charge.
That is one of the main reasons i continue to acquire Spydercos.
Very seldom is there a problem ,but when there is they take care of it right away.
Great work Sal & the crew at Spyderco.
highest regards,Rick,in Nfld. Canada.
