Clip point?

So do I want a RC-3 Mil in clip point or not? It will be my first "Knife". I plan on EDC it in a pack. Does it make it more versatile or more dangerous.

Your expert opinions and internet shenanigans are welcome and appreciated.

the clip point was designed as more of a self defense knife, for EDC tasks i would just go with the normal version.

+1.

I don't see a real need for a clip point, it would hinder batoning (small kindling to get a fire going, of course) and you could cut yourself easier.

+2 on the no clip point.
In a lot of places the sharpened top makes the knife legally a dagger, and therefore a deadly weapon rather than a tool.

on the other hand being a ESEE 3 the Clip point could work as a Firesteel striker and leaving your PE in good working order and the sharpend spine portion as a firesteel striker. No dire need to baton with the ESEE3
My plans anyway when funds allow me to aquire the ESEE3MILCP

+4 no clip point. If this is your first knife, why complicate things by having two edges to cut yourself on rather than just one. As they say, if you don't cut yourself at least once, your not using your knife hard enough LOL.

It is good looking, I'll give it that much....

Thanks guys. Yeah, I want the MIL3-S, gonna skip the clip point. I do like my knives to have serrations.

This will not be my first knife, but it will be the first knife I spend more than $10 on.

I have a multitude of small and large knives mostly for utility work and a S&W that I EDC for utility and poking the baddies if I need to.

Plus as a volie fire/emt/srt member I find myself in some *#@$ most of the time so I want the sharpened pommel for popping glass. Just the other day I watched a guy on a motorcycle get run over by a MCI bus. He is ok (for getting run over by a bus) but I dove under there with my phone and my blade ready for the worst.

thanks again

Is they any news on the clip point being offered later on the ESEE 4, 5, or 6? Thanks for the pics Texastonydobbs that is a nice looking setup.

Checking on (ESEE's) website, plans are in the works for clip points for the -4 and -6.

Don't know about the -5.

Also, keep in mind that in some jurisdictions a clip point may be illegal to carry or even own. I do not know where the OP lives but anyone considering ordering one should probably check out the legality first so that you know the deal before hand. I think that the law is plan stupid but that doesn't really matter.

they look awesome but other than self defense i cant think of how a cp would be better than the original

I was under the impression the top edge wasn't actually sharpened (doesn't look like it from the pic). This should make a difference from a legal standpoint. If the top is actually sharpened I don't think I would care much for it. If not the ESEE-3 is the only one I would choose in a clip point. That size of blade wouldn't be used to baton from me. I think the clip point would be more versatile as an all around knife for EDC. To me one of the functions of an EDC is self defense. I would always check the laws in your location though before carrying any knife.

I live in NJ where it is illegal to own anything larger than a nail clipper. The law has some cocmamy writing in it thaqt states if you can't come up with a good reason to have said "weapon" on your person it is illegal. There seems to be no limit length, style etc..

Basically you hvae no right to carry a weapon in NJ.

That sucks! to me a knife is not a weapon, but a tool. Not just "a" tool but the most basic and necessary tool second only to your brain. The ends to which you use that tool are numerous and different to everyone. A knife can get you food, fire, shelter, and yes protect you. Tell them that, I am sure they will understand  I recently spent some time in a couple of countries That do not allow carry of a knife, so I carried a surefire E2D defender. That gave some peace of mind.

I was wondering the advantages of this myself. I think it would be a good added function as if I want to baton I use a larger knife, not a 3" knife. I would think that would be a bonus so you could use a ESEE knife as a fire starter without ruining the edge or removing the coating. IMHO
