Clip removal

Depends on the knife.

  • Most older three screw clips use small phillips screws and take a #1 phillips driver.
  • Two nickels are the best thing for barrel bolt clips.
  • Newer three screw clips use T-6 Torx screws.
  • Most of the newer single screw wire clips use a T-9 Torx, although a few use a T-8 Torx screw.
  • A few of the older, high end models don't use any of the above.

I repositioned the clips on a Manix 2, Persistence and Endura 4 and used a T5 Torx bit, or so the label on my screwdriver says.

OK, so what you're saying is.....you don't know.

Anyone know?;) Just kidding.

Thanks for the info. :)

You are lucky you didn't strip the heads of your screws. T5 is too small and Spyderco doesn't use any T5, mostly T6 for the smaller screws on the handle and clip.

From a conversation with Charlynn in W&R one time, I was told that Spyderco uses over 45 different screws in their knives. It will probably help to be a bit more specific about which knife you mean.

Am sure that's true, but it's a bit deceptive too. They may, for example use half a dozen or more different combinations of length and size, all of which have T-6 Torx heads. Even barrel bolt come in two materials, and possibly two lengths of each, to accommodate different handle thicknesses. Right now, at least 90% of all Spyderco fittings are Torx, and the only sizes I've ever encountered are T-6, T-8, T-9, T-10, and T-15.

Could be that the drivers were packed wrong in the box. I got a Torx set which has mini screwdrivers from T5 to T10. The one that fit was the leftmost one which said T5.

I'll check the measurements again.

You're right! I was extremely lucky I didn't strip the screw heads!

I double checked the screwdriver I used and when I tried turning the screws, the screwdriver bit wouldn't bite. The bit was rounded off already.

I borrowed a buddy's set and it turns out I needed T6 and T7 for my knives.

The set I had was a cheap Chinese product. The bits were tapered so it allowed the screwdriver to mate with the screws though the driver was smaller than what spec called for. Luckily the screwdrivers metal was softer than those on the Spyderco screws.

My friend's set had no tapered bits so the wrong sized driver would not fit into the screws. Guess I'm sticking to Stanley and Craftsman from now on.

Whew. Close call.
