Clip screws are too long!

I FINALLY got one of those black/green Benchmade Ares, but mine has these strange clip screws that are about 3-times too long. They extend into the blade slot and rub against the blade causing the blade to be forced against the opposite liner. :grumpy:

Is there any way to shorten these?
Anybody got some Benchmade clip screws they can send me?

Wow! Someone really dropped the ball on that one. Contact BM directly and they will ship you out new screws free of charge. They sent me a whole clip once and it came in four days. Show them their mistake too as I'm sure they will want to know about that.

They must have hired someone new that didn't know the screws have to be cut off to a specific length.

A dremmel and a small cut off wheel like you can buy at any Big Lots for cheap or at Lowes or Sears for a bit more $ can cut those off for you to a specific length but doing that while mounted in the knife can be risky.

Also, it is my opinion that if those screws scratched up your blade that BM owes you a new one if not a whole new knife.

did you buy that new???

That is hard to believe.

The easiest solution is to take them out and grind them to the proper length.

With ebay it's hard to tell. It LOOKS mint, but ya never know. Somebody could have tampered with the knife. I can't assume it was a factory mistake.

The blade isn't scratched at all.

OK, I emailed the same photos to Benchmade asking them politely for a proper set of screws. I'm sure they'll offer something. They're good like that.

I have a dremil and cut-off wheels, but I'm kinda worried that cutting/grinding those screws down might damage the threads; I'm no pro.

Besides, those super-long clip screws might come in handy for pimping something else some day.

I know Benchmade pretty well...They WILL send you 3 of the correct screws, just for the asking. Give 'em a call on Monday. 1-800-800-7427

Ya know what sucks? I've been looking for this knife for about 3 years and when I FINALLY got it yesterday I wanted desperately to carry it, but I CAN'T because if I open and close it a bunch of times it WILL scratch the blade. :(

The red/black Ares was my FIRST "quality" knife and was the knife that got me hooked. I handed it at a gun show and my jaw hit the floor. CRKT just wouldn't do it anymore. I ran home, sold all my knives and bought that one from Dillon when it was on the back of the Blue Press for $115. Carried it for about a year non-stop before I started itchin' for other quality knives.

Now, 4 1/2 years, about 200 knives later, it's still one of my favorite knives of all time.

BM said they're very sorry and they have a new set of screws on their way to me. No charge. I'm still not convinced it was a factory mistake - that someone didn't tamper with the knife - but it was cool of them. As usual.

Funny...

I had the same thing happen to me on a brand new in box Mini-Griptilian. The freaking middle clip screw touched the blade when it was shut. I replaced the screws with shorter ones and then gave the knife to a friend.
