Hi guys. The title pretty much says it. This is an unlinered handle and I have tried some two part epoxy. I have some good West System I haven't used yet. I wanted to see if the generic general purpose stuff would work first. Should I scrap the epoxy idea and get larger diameter screws or something like that? The other thought is maybe replacing the handles when funds allow. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

If the knife comes apart and the epoxy didn't work or you elected not to use it you can do this.

Thumb studs can be had for $1.00 at knife and gun finishing supplies or other knife suppliers. These are approximately 3/16" diameter. You can cut off a slice of one after mounting it securely in a pair of vice grips so just enough of the end sticks out. Use a thin cut off disc and a dremmel to do that.

Then when you get close to the final part of the cut hold it over a cup of water so it falls in that when it comes off. Cut off a slice about the same thickness as the pocket clip. What you will have now is a pre threaded washer to use as a backing plate. You will need to drill a 13/64 hole on the under side of the mounting hole or basically on the inside of the folder either in the liner or under the G10 scale. Drill down far enough to recess the washer you just made and place it inside the recess with a spot of super glue on it to hold it in place. Let that sit and then thread your pocket clip in.

If all three screws (or two if its just got two) are stripped you can make a backing plate to encompase all three holes threaded and ready to use but you have to have the wrench and 2-56 taps to thread your own in that event.

Um, couldn't you just tap slightly larger holes in the G-10, and use slightly larger screws..?

You will probably make the clip unsightly doing that if it could work because the holes in the clip would need enlarged as well as the ones in the G10 and Spyderco puts them so close to the edge to begin with on their clips that the next size up in screw diameter, which is a 4-40 I think, may in fact be too large for the clip to accomadate the screw. At the very least the head of the screws would overhang off the clip to collect junk and catch fuzz and pocket strings all the time but the metal on the clip may get very thin to where it could easily break also. Hope that makes sense. Obviously if it were just the G10 we were dealing with that could be done but the clip is in this scenario also so that has to be taken into account.

I would move the clip to another location and plug the holes with some epoxy (get some to that glow in the dark powder from knifekits.com to mix in, the blue is my favorite). This may sound crazy, but use a screw with a finer thread. I put a clip on an Al Mar feather lite with 1-72 button heads, threaded into the Micarta handle. No problems. I have even bent the clip with out stripping out the screws. I also used a dab of Loctite to hold them in.

The Al Mar is a small lockback and doubles as my tie clip when I have to wear a suit. Not too many people notice it, but then I don't wear my suit very often.....
