All of you mammoth ivory fans that got a little concerned about the recent thread on changes in the international mammoth ivory market need to just have patience. We may be just a few thousand years from a new source of the stuff for custom knife handles!
CNN reports that the remains of a 6-month old female mammoth were discovered on the Yamai peninsula of Russia. It is believed to be the best specimen of its kind to date.
The animal dates to the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago. It is well-preserved with it's trunk and eyes still intact, and some fur still on the body. Scientists are hopeful it will yield the kind of DNA that could be used in cloning in order to resurrect this extinct member of the elepahant family. Experts are expected to carry out an extensive study of the specimen, including CT scans of its internal organs.
Found this interesting enough to share.
