Eric,
I liked the feel of the older blades too, but the complaints of being too slippery in the field under a variety of conditions, made us look for a better handle. The textured micarta has proven to be quite an inovation in comparison. This new style on the Active Duty brings the best of both worlds to our line. With texture on the sides only and handshaped along the perimeters, this handle should please nearly everyone.
Thanks for stopping by,

Jerry,
It is not the texture of the Quilted and Snakeskin Micarta that I like less than the old smooth micarta, it is the shape of the handle scales themselves, as well as the thickness.
These pictures don't illustarate it well, but here goes:
On the Old SH Busse knives the handle scales were thicker, had sculpted contours and nicely rounded tops and bottoms. This provides a very comfortable grip for me. Also the fact that the grip is thicker reduces hand fatigue and shock transmited to the hand during chopping.
On the other hand (excuse the pun), the E-handled knives seemed to have very square slabs of much thinner micarta.
I think Yvsa was the first to point this out when he got his BM-E and had rounded his out with a file. I got my first E-Handle Steelheart later and found the same thing.
Dave Costin observed the same trend, and replaced his flat, square, thin scales with thick, nicely rounded micarta scales.
He has also resorted to cord wrapping his BM-E to increase the grip size and round it out.
I have noticed that the new line of "mid-size" (Satin Jack and BA3) are somewhat better in that they are slighty rounded. I had one of my BA3s redone, including having the handle radiuses and the scale to tang fit cleaned up. The grip is much more comfortable now, and the knife being re-ground drasticly increased performance.
It goes without saying that handle comfort is very subjective, what is good for one might not fit someone else well. But I think Busse has taken a huge step in the right direction (back on track) with the handle on the Active Duty. The tang to scale fit, being hand finished, looks much better fit and finish on the recent knives I have been seeing.
I hope nobody takes this post the wrong way. I own, enjoy and use Busse knives. They are among my favorite knives, and INFI is hands down my favorite steel.
