Doing so shoud be trivial on a smartphone, regardless of make and model. Being that this is BladeForums, you would be better served at smartphone specific forums (e.g. CrackBerry.com for BlackBerry devices).

I know but I've seen people on here who are experienced with stuff like this, I would actually expect more people on here to know because I'm sure many do the same thing..
 
Add the sender as an e-mail contact in your phone. Then add them to your VIPs list (Apple) or Priority Senders (Samsung-Android). Then add a notification sound for e-mails received from your VIP or Priority Senders list.
