Almost closed the deal this morning!!!! Maybe next time :)
A small group of does cut into the woods behind me :(
Next time I'll be in a different tree facing that trail. Went about 20 yards behind.
I was thinking they may actually do that so now I know for sure. I would have been busted if I had tried to shoot cause they were head on towards me.
If I'd have had a gun I'd be cleaning one.

I heard a doe walk behind me while fishing, so i grabbed my camera and walked up to look and get a picture. Next thing i know i hear a fawn crying down the path, so i just stood still and waited. the fawn came and investigated me and i got some pictures. She was close enough to where i could have taken two steps and pet her.

Close encounters - fun, isn't it? :D

I had a doe bust me this morning too...

Had a short morning hunt in which I sat very carefully in a patch of poison ivy. About fifteen minutes after I settled in, I heard a deer following along my back trail. Tried to switch from a seated position to take a knee but unfortunately the doe was much closer (15 yards or so) than I thought.

She snorted at me and ran back a few yards when she caught my movement or heard me. She stood there and snorted a few times, so I snorted back - hoping she'd think I was another deer. We snorted back and forth a bit - she eventually ran away and I had to blow my nose.

I'm still not sure I was busted found a small bit of info that stated a social snort is 1 or 2 snorts. Not a quick blow with multiple short blows after.

What I heard was 1 not really alarming sounding blow like I was hearing this summer while scouting. This was kind of a single mid level snort.

I'm going in tomorrow again to test this info :)

I've had multiple close encounters with deer while turkey hunting in the spring. I had set up on a tree that was right on a fence line, didn't initially notice the deer trail that went right next to the tree I was sitting on. Nice hole in the fence behind me. Doe walks right to the path, stops about 6 feet from me and starts sniffing and pawing at the dirt. She couldn't wind me, and was quite uncertain what that big cammo'd lump at the base of the tree was. I eventually said "boo" to her. She did a double-take, snorted again, and turned around and crossed the fence about 15 feet east of me.

This past spring, had a small herd of deer roaming the area I was watching. Eventually, they made it right past my set-up. One of them got curious and walked to within 5-6 feet of me. Eventually they spooked at something else, not me... and all ran off.

Seems to me, the best way to kill a deer is go turkey hunting! :D

Got a small spike buck today. First deer and first bow kill!!!!
Small but I couldn't resist. Meat in freezer!!

So what knife(knives) did you take hunting to help field dress the deer and if you plan to process it yourself, what tools will you be using? :)

Well. I have my black and blue g10 handled Gremlin and a spare ubob to use. I take a cooler with 2 frozen soda bottles for ice.

If I was with out help I was going to dress and quarter if I needed to. We have a good processing place 3 miles from house so I was able to get my uncle and get his truck and get it to them fast.

I was prepared for me getting it packable but didn't need to today.

I need arrows and more muzzys as I put 3 in him!! :)

Turns out it wasnt a small spike. First deer with horns walks out and first deer taken and first now kill I went nuts !!!

you will know when you get busted.. they will show you their white middle finger as they DD out of the area.

they do have warning blows.. its social i guess but what they do is, when they get into an area they do not feel comfortable in but not quite spooked they will blow a warning or alarming snort (maybe run in a small circle or stomp their front feet. they do this to provoke a movement so they can pick you out.. obviously you stay still.. they will continue to check the area and they will calm down... when they snort the first thing you should do (if you have not done this already) is take note of wind direction. if the wind is not blowing your scent to them then they saw something coming in they wanted to check out but not get too close. i get these a lot. but since i hunt via the wind direction i rarely get busted. what usually gets me is motion. on occasions, smell. the wind can whirl in circles in revines, dips and wooded areas. keep that in mind too.
