Under these circumstances:

Obviously, we aren't talking about the zoo!

And you weren't hunting at the time.

And since it is too easy to walk on a garter snake, only the top 5 venomous snakes.

My second time visiting Florida before I moved there, I was going for a morning walk with my friend's child, a terrible twos' snot who promised to behave. We crossed the street and went by the canal (obviously Gulf Coast). As we were walking up, about 8 feeet away from the water's edge I get THAT feeling - the "danger sense" feeling. As I look up, I see an 8-footer sunning himself where we would have walked up to in a few seconds.

Been 3 feet away from the Mojave Green Rattler, which is both Hemo and nerve toxin and is supposedly very aggressive. I had my old charter arms bulldog 44 and was ready to plug it but it decided discretion was the better and left, so I let it go.

I ran into a black bear up in the west virginia mountains, literally. I saw him when I rounded a corner up in the hills and there he/she was arms length away from me. We both were surprised and both backed away from each other.

I was in a tent with a furiuosly, curious black bear when I was a kid (8 or so) seems my screaming and hacking with a scout knife was enough to quell the curiousity.

The summer before last I walked into the middle of a herd of Colorado elk that had bedded down for the afternoon. They all woke up at the same time, with a cow elk and her calf no more than 10 feet away. I thought I was going to take a hoofing. Later that trip, I was following a game trail with heavy elk sign. I finally caught up with three nice bulls once I entered a drwa or clearing. I looked uphill and at about 150 yards a blonde-colored black bear was paralleling me. He stood up and looked at me, then ducked out of sight. I $hit myself a bit and continued on after about 30 minutes perched on top of a rock with my khuk drawn.

When I was about 8, a fer-de-lance struck at my forearm in my back yard in Caracas, Venezuela. He didn't miss me by distance, he missed me by timing. I $hit myself a bit and then got the maid who went Venezuelan latina-with-a-machete psycho on that snake. It made me understand what John Bobbitt went through.:D

I spooked a deer once when I wasn't hiking. It was May or June, and the deer was bedded down about 10 yards from me. I heard it, but didn't anything until it bolted. Startled me.

Years ago while ship wreck diving off the east coast, saw me in very close proximity to blue sharks, perhaps twelve feet away. On the trail the other day hiking, six whitetail deer came within fifty feet or so. I just stood in silence and admired them.

almost stepped on a fer de lance in Costa rica lying right under the leaf litter in the middle of the trail...Had what I think was an eyelash viper in my hut in belize used a curtain rod to pushit into a pillow case and the it out the window...I'm always grabbin snakes and turtles and critters, got really close to a 10 ft boa in costa rica as well he was in a hollow under a mess of driftwood and i needed to get real close to get a good picture...I've petted my share of gators while kayaking in the everglades and in Ocala. FLA. and have had some relatively close encounters w/bears 1 w/ a bobcat under a tent platform in a campground and , lots of dealings w/ one of my favs the raccoon

I work in secluded airfields, and one night was surrounded by coyotes. I got past them and into my office trailer by opening my umbrella. I think it confused them for a minute. I have had other animal encounters, but that was the scariest.

Well...

Not quite wild, but I had a highland cow stick its head, complete with 4-foot span horns, through the open door of my backpacking tent. It came in sort of sideways, snorted at me, and carefully backed out after a few seconds of staring at each other. Thing could have flattened me!

Had my tent raided by hedgehogs at night (also in Scotland)

Came face-to-face (about 12 inches away) from a huge owl when out night prowling in the woods. We stared at each other for about 30 seconds, then I quietly left.

Oh, and I used to teach EBD pupils (Emotional and Behavioural Disorder) at school. They make wild animals look tame!

Rick.

stumbled on a rattler on a rock pile when i was in boy scouts...luckily he let me know he was there so i only got within 10ft or so.

king cobra was 2 feet away in a paddy field, king cobra was peering at me (cos I saw something and I poked about in the bush/brambles and I saw that famous non-hooded head), monitor lizards, otters, wild boar, mouse deer....nothing terribly exciting.

I've had whitetail fawns come up to me and sniff my pants leg on two separate occasions while not hunting (was scouting before the season)

I've caught a number of possums, snakes, etc. Caught a live coon once. My dad caught a bobcat kitten one time. I'd advise against it unless you have welding gloves on.

Let me see many years ago camping up at yosemity camp site C. i went hiking with my dog that was about 6 month old at the time. Well the pup was all over the place. looking down into a ravin i hear the pup barks his head off. I go running up the trail to see what happend. As soon as i go around a large boulder i see my pup (doberman) about an arms lengh away from a brown bear barking in his face. The bear was trying to ignore him the all time. All of a sudden the bear give this huge roar right in the stupid pups face. The pup turns around running in my direction. With the bear behind him lumbering. So here is me running with the pup catching up i grab him by the neck toss him over my shoulder and keep on running. The all time im not even looking back. I run into the camp site yelling there is a bear behind me there is a bear behind me. Every one turn around and looking. I stop too and look back and there is nothing out there. I bet the bear never made more then ten steps in my direction i was just so scared i never even bothered looking back. I ran about 15-20 min at 8,000ft I was so scared i think i could run easy twice as long.
Another time my first time going backpacking. I had over 85lb on my back. We were up at the high sierra, thats me and the pup again this time he was about 7 year old. We crossed the cottonwood pass at close to 12,000'. went down the other side and crossing a big meadow. So what my sweat pup dicides to do run over to one of the bigest bull i had ever seen and bark at him. Pissed him off so the bull is after him and he run in my direction. Im in the middle of the clearing all i see is a small stand of young trees. I run right there and the dog right behind me all happy and tail wagging. The bull walks around the stand for about 5min and walks away. When he walked far enough i get out and started to walk back to the trail. I let go of the pup cause its hard to walk and hold on to him. As soon as i let him go back to the bull it is for him. The bull dont waste one sec and after the pup. Now emagine this there is a guy with a HUGE pack running into the stand of trees with a doberman behind him and bull behind the dog. This time he stayed with us for more then 10min. Well this time i held on to him untill we passed the bull.
There are a few more but im tired of writing lol

Sasha

About 2 inches from a Northern Pacific rattlesnake (I would swear I didn't touch the ground between almost stepping on it, hearing/seeing it, and being about 10 feet back from it).

Tamed raccoons and a squirrel to the point of hand feeding (could pet the raccoons).

A pair of coyotes about 10 feet. They decided the path was theirs at the time.

About 5 feet from a really annoying deer who decided to block my driveway a few weks ago.

Oh, and I rescued a baby cottontail once, so got to carry him around in gloved hands.

The top 5 venomous snakes all reside in Australia. . .

I have not had any close encounters with poisonous creatures, not surprising considering they are scarce in my neck of the woods. Worst venom threat in my state is probably Brown Recluse spiders. Never had any run-ins with dangerous mammals either. I had a pet chipmunk when I was a little kid. It would run around inside my dad's shirt.

Hehe, I should have been more specific.

I meant type as in rattlesnakes all one type, coral, cobra, etc.
