I posted this in gadgets and gear originally but it didn't get any bites..so I guess ill try it here :)

Hunting season is starting up before we know it, and i'm not quite ready to say the least. My usual hunting apparel has worn out over the last 5 years. I replaced my hunting jacket last year with a nice Cabelas parka (scenk-lok, gore-tex, the whole shibang) that is more than enough to keep my upper body warm and dry. However, my bibs that I usually wear, have just been replaced with a pair of Cabelas MT050 Gore-Tex Scent-lok pants because the price was too good to pass up. Unforunately, they aren't insulated. I have under armour cold gear thermals that do a decent job, but my lower body will definitely need a good middle layer, which leads us to...

What's a good middle layer for hunting? Being that I have a good base layer and a good weatherproof outer layer, I need a good middle layer that will insulate the best I guess? I was thinking wool, but have no idea. The best thing I've seen so far is this http://www.cabelas.com/product/Brow...tt=full+curl&WTz_l=Header;Search-All+Products

I would really like to keep this around $50, because if it were much more (aka $100) I would have just been better off getting the insulated version of the pants

Thanks for the help guys...hopefully there is something out there for me.

Hi,

A lot depends on what, where, and how you hunt. There is a big difference on how I dress depending on whether I'm in the duckboat, deer stand, or following my Springers hunting upland. The actual temps and conditions can all be identical, but my clothing will change.

So what are you hunting and where? How much energy are you expending?

Whoops! That certainly would be a helpful bit of information.

I'll be hunting mid-late November up until end of December. A majority of the time i'll be sitting for hours and hours, so energy expenditure will be quite low. Every now and then I may decide to stalk, but that might be once a year. I will be hunting bear/deer in Western and Central PA, where the colder the better. It tends to be around 35 degrees, but can vary quite a bit both ways.

bmilla, I just sent you an email through BF regarding some great hunting slacks. I tried PM first, but your box is full.

Let me know what you think.

stick with synthetics as undergarments and wool for the really cold days. do not wear cotton in the winter. this goes for socks too. cotton = summer and wool = winter. cotton loses most of its heat trapping abilites when wet. wool does not. neither does most of the synthetics. just one thing to remember, synthetics catch on fire easy so be careful around campfires

layer accordingly and try not to sweat.

If you shop around you can find some great base layer merino that might just eliminate your need for mid layer bottoms.

I've gone to Merino base layers exclusively. They regulate temperature very well and they breathe! Synthetics leave me feeling like I'm wearing a hefty-bag under my pants. And maybe it's just me... but the synthetic base's get pretty rank after a day in the field. Seems like they not only hold body odor, but somehow amplify it... I mean... there is no way I stink THAT bad. :o Still, I don't have to worry about that with the Merino. It just seems to cancel out B.O. It's more expensive, but you can wear the stuff for days with no smell.

Be aware that it comes in different thickness' just like synthetics. I bought some thinner stuff and some thicker for versatility. For a pretty thick pair look into the Minus 33 brand. Smartwool is pretty thin. Check it out... great stuff. Drop me a line if I can help.

One thing for sure... if you go Merino you will never go back to synthetic base layers. ;)
