As much as I dislike Apple in general, I'm pretty sure I want an Ipad2. I was thinking of the wifi only 32GB. Has anyone heard if they are coming out with a #3??? If it is going to be within the next couple of months then I will wait and buy a reduced price #2. If not then I will go ahead and get it now. Also, any thoughts on the 3G w/ wifi vs. the wifi only? Thanks for the help, guys. This is always a good place to come before I spend a chunk of money on gear.

This is the week of the annual CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas. You might want to check out engadget.com. A whole slew of tablets have been announced so far and probably many others will be in the coming days.

I am debating the exact same thing, I have an iPad 1 32gb WiFi. I really like it, from what i can gather on the iPad 2 vs iPad 3 is that it "should" be coming with a full retina display... It was supposed to come on the 2 but apple in it's infinite wisdom decided to hold back. Also the processor is being bumped up from an i5 to an i7. I'm figuring the 3 may also come with better battery life and a higher res camera than the 2. Over all probably not a whole heap of difference between the 2 and 3 (except you can bet it'll be more expensive). I have a WiFi model but i also have an iPhone that is a mobile hot spot so wherever my phone is, my iPad has internet. I'll more than likely get the WiFi only one. If you have a smartphone with WiFi and can turn it into a "Hot Spot" I would think of going that route... It's probably cheaper than the 3G plan from ATT or Verizon. The iPad runs on the same OS as the iPhone so it probably won't use much more data than your phone would if you decide to go that route.

-Best of luck!

No apple products so far. More than likely won't be announced at CES as they usually do their own events. Wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a new one within a few months though. It has been said that they will keep the iPad 2 on for now as a lower cost option when the 3 does come out. I actually own an original and an iPad 2. I can still sell the original for over $300, so they keep their value pretty well. If you want to go with an iPad 2 its not a bad decision, there will always be something better months after you buy tech. They are actually talking 2 iPad releases this year. The 3 in the spring and the 4 in the fall.

I use mine to play games on and browse the internet while in bed when I don't feel like turning on the laptop.
I use it for nothing that a laptop could not do better/easier. I don't even like reading on it, and use my Kindle Keyboard (electronic ink version) for that.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 3G Iphone which does not have that hot-spot capability as far as I know, but I am due for an upgrade so I am thinking of a new Iphone 4 and a 32GB Ipad2 wifi only so with my phone I will be internet ready wherever I can get a signal. My biggest concern is whether or not anyone has an idea of when the Ipad3 might be introduced. It could save me a couple of hundred bucks if I only have to wait a month or two. Yourall's assistance is much appreciated. Thanks again. :)

TX G P ^ Good to know. I often find myself reaching for my iphone instead of my laptop when I just want to check something quick and I don't have a lot of typing to do. Reading on the iphone is a good bit tougher than reading on ipad. Also my only current laptop is big and bulky and I hate carrying it anywhere. For work in the field where it will only be used in a pinch to being able to travel to throwing it into a school backpack. The tablet just makes sense, I think.

You are spot on. The tablet is great to just throw and go. Lightweight, doesn't take up any room, and the iPad2 is pretty darn fast. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Wait for the 3 or buy the 2 now. They are both great items!

The iPad 2 is a great product. Like you I'm not an apple fanboy but I use the iPad for media consumption, email, web surfing and e book reading. It's easy to use and quick and much more convenient than a laptop for these things. The tablet format is far superior for e book reading.

I finally gave up on waiting for the iPad 3 to be released and decided to buy the iPad 2 and be happy with it. I seem to have spent half my life talking myself out of buying things because the rumour mill sayd the next generation generation is just about to be released!

Apart from the retina display it's hard to see what they could improve on the iPad 2. People say its likely to have a better camera, but I'm not going to wave around a £500 tablet like a camera for someone to steal it, and the ipad 2 processor is more than fast enough, if I want to play a bleeding edge game I'll use my pc or invest in a play station.

I have the Ipad2 and really like it for what it is. I put some pretty fun apps on it and enjoy reading on it away from my computer. I went with the 32G with wifi and it's been fine. Some people hate the camera but I found it serviceable for what it is, I would hop the 3 has a better one, though.

I will most likely buy an Ipad3 and give this to the wife.

I have an iPad2 wifi. There are plenty of free wifi spots around where I live and work. The only negative is the inability to run adobe flash websites. Overall I'm very happy with it and would recommend one.

I'm in a similar situation...waiting for the iPad3 to arrive, or get the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. I've got an iPhone 4 which I plan to use as a hotspot. I like Apple products but want to use a tablet for media consumption, loading movies, surfing the net, etc. I just hate that you have to convert your media to their format. That's why I'm strongly considering the Prime which plays multiple video formats and is overall much easier to load content onto.

BTW I've also recently read about the 2 iPads this year, and the continued availability of the iPad2 at a lower price point as an entry model.

Looks like it's gonna be the 2 32G wifi with a phone upgrade to follow shortly. Thanks to all for their input. You guys are good.

Sounds like you've made up your mind, but just to toss a little more fuel on the fire, I really like my iPad 2. It's fantastic for my commute. Play games, read a book (check the Baen Free Library for many free or reasonably cost e-books if your tastes run towards pulp sci-fi), check Facebook or read/delete emails. I can even check when the next train is coming via OpenMBTA. If you have streaming Netflix you can even stream movies on it, which is awesome! My wife is a photographer and she bought one to use for client presentations but she also uses it to watch the Today show in the kitchen while she's making dinner (plus play games, etc).
