I'm very interested in medievil arts, and I've always wanted to forge swords. Anyone have any beginner tips? I don't have a forge, and the only way I can get one is make one. I have little idea on how to fabricate one, does anyone know a really cheap and (relatively) easy way to start out with forging?

Learn to forge knives first. Think of it like how an engineer might build planes and bridges; they use mini-models. The knife will teach you the basics of blade forging. Then you can adjust, equip and construct a sword blade with greater ease and understanding.

At least half the bladesmiths out there make there own forges. I'm sure someone will chime in with links. Don Fogg's site is an excellent resource for this and many other topics. www.dfoggknives.com

I know a fella outside of Elmira, NY by the name of Dan Cook. He belongs to a blacksmithing club and makes forges in his spare time. He does good work and his forges are at least half the price in the catalogs. If you want his info, send me an e-mail. If you need a hand with anything else, let me know. I'm only an hour away from Binghamton.

What is the club called that he's in? I'd love to join a smithing club, I'm sure I'd learn a lot faster than reading online.

Swords are damn hard. Start with knives, then understand a lot of it, and try it.
