OK. Just when you thought it was safe...Here comes another question regarding steel quality. This time the scope of the question will be limited to the performance of three stainless steels: CM-154, ATS-34 & BG-42 for use in a general field knife. How does each compare with regard to edge holding, toughness and stain resistance. Let 'em rip! Thanks.

There all very close to the same. The BG42 will give you a small amount of preformance increase BUT if you didnt know which was which you wouldnt know the difference. If you want to see the difference I would try cpm 440v and cpm 420v in a blade. There is a difference. :]

Take a look!!!

cm154 and ats34 are the same thing. 154 is made in america. ats34 is made in japan.

Note opinions on this are not overly uniform. Chris Reeve for example has made very strong statements about his BG-42 and says not only does it outperform ATS-34, it is a better knife steel than A2 and the only reason he doesn't make his fixed blades out of it (including the big ones like the Project) is because of the price increase it would make necessary.
