Has anyone hand tried one of these?

Looks like a good design for a tent light/reading light, and was thinking of ordering one, but I saw a couple of really negative notes on another forum. I have never handled one, have just seen description on CMG's site - which of course is kinda bias......

Anyway, I'll be off for a few days in the desert next month and need a new light to bring along, so any first-hand info, pro or con, would be most appreciated.

I own one. I use it in the top webbing of my large or backpack tent as a good light that is not so bright that it screws up your night vision. I also leave it behind the driver's seat in a little pocket there on the way to/from campouts (and other times) so the kids can see/find stuff without blinding me while driving at night.

Drawback? A little hard to switch on and they fall apart if you drop them on something hard.

Summary: fine for what it is meant for, could have been engineered a bit more ruggedly.

Yes, check ebay as some guy has them for great prices there. I bought 8 from him pretty cheap....then bought 8 more! just email him.

I leave these everywhere as they are "always on" on low level making them easy to find in a car, a backpack, a nightstand, etc.

I bought one when they first became available. I'm not crazy about the design. It seems that CMG tried to make it LOOK like a typical candle lantern which means its much bigger than it needs to be.

The lanyard slips into little grooves on the side of the case. It also slips out of those grooves quite easily.

There are so many other options in LED lights that I'd pass on this one. For a much cheaper alternative, Eveready makes a small lantern with 2 white LEDs (4 AA batteries). You can find them at Wal-Mart for about $8.00!

candlepowerforums.com is very similar to bladeforums if you're into flashlites, LED types or otherwise.

I was on cpf as I read this. Not as good software, but very good forum with less flaming.
